Attaining Salvation – St. Alphonsus Liguori
Day 2: The Value of a Soul

Thematic Summary:
St. Alphonsus teaches us to recognize the soul’s priceless value.
All created things—sun, moon, stars, earth, gold, kingdoms—are nothing compared to one immortal soul.
Why? Because a soul is made in the image of God, redeemed by the Blood of Jesus, and destined for eternal union with the Blessed Trinity.

Key Teachings:
1. The soul is immortal and cannot cease to exist.
It will either enjoy God forever in Heaven or suffer eternally in Hell.

2. Jesus came not to save empires but to save souls.
His Passion, Death, and Resurrection were for one purpose: your eternal salvation.

3. A single mortal sin endangers the soul’s eternal destiny.
The devil knows the soul’s worth—this is why he tempts man so fiercely.

4. God judges not by human standards of success, but by the state of a soul.
Fame, riches, and honors pass; only the soul remains forever.

Spiritual Applications:
– Consider the great price Jesus paid for your soul.
– Be willing to lose all rather than lose grace.
– Value every person’s soul with the same seriousness.
– Let your daily prayer be: “Jesus, save my soul and the souls of all!”

Saintly Echoes:
– St. John Vianney: “The soul is a beautiful diamond; we must polish it through Confession and grace.”
– St. Catherine of Siena: “The soul is more precious than the entire universe.”
– St. Alphonsus: “God regards not what we give, but what we leave for His love.”

Reflection:
Do I see my soul—and every soul—as God does?
Do I allow the world to distract me from eternity?
Would I give anything to save just one soul, including my own?

Let this chapter be a renewal of your commitment:
to guard your soul, to love souls, and to work always for their salvation in Christ.
