Attaining Salvation – St. Alphonsus Liguori
Day 1: Introduction – Why Salvation Must Be Our Only Goal
Thematic Summary:
St. Alphonsus begins by emphasizing this eternal truth:
“The salvation of your soul is the most important business you have in this life.”
He reminds us that all else will pass—health, riches, honors—but the soul is eternal.
Salvation is not optional, nor is it automatic. It must be desired, pursued, and guarded through grace and effort.
Key Teachings:
1. One soul, one eternity
“If you lose your soul once, you lose it forever.”
2. Everything must be ordered toward Heaven
“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Mark 8:36)
3. Hell exists, and many go there
St. Alphonsus warns that neglect, sin, and presumption are causes of eternal ruin.
4. God’s mercy is great—but not to be abused
Many delay conversion assuming they’ll repent later. But “later” is not promised.
Spiritual Applications:
– Examine your life. Is salvation your first priority?
– Are you living with a sense of eternity?
– Daily pray: “Lord, save me at any cost.”
– Detach from sin, even venial sin. It weakens the will.
Saintly Echoes:
– St. Augustine: “Unhappy is he who knows all things but does not know Thee, O my God.”
– St. Teresa of Ávila: “Let nothing disturb you… God alone suffices.”
– St. Francis Xavier: “Give me souls, take all else.”
Let this reflection burn into your heart. The salvation of souls is why Jesus came, why the Church exists, and why you were chosen.
