Attaining Salvation – St. Alphonsus Liguori
Day 3: The Shortness of Life

Thematic Summary:
St. Alphonsus reminds us that life is brief and uncertain. Time is a gift—but also a test. Every moment brings us closer to eternity. We are pilgrims, not permanent residents.

The saints viewed life as a moment of mercy in which to win Heaven. St. Alphonsus pleads with us: do not delay conversion, because the next hour is not guaranteed.

Key Teachings:
1. Life is like a vapor: it appears for a little while, and then vanishes.
“What is your life? It is a vapor that appears for a short time and then vanishes.” (James 4:14)

2. The world is a deceitful place: it promises happiness but cannot give it.
Earth is a passageway—only Heaven is our home.

3. Death can come at any moment. We must live as though each day were our last.
Procrastination is one of Satan’s favorite tools.

4. Only what is done for God will remain.
Titles, honors, beauty, strength—all vanish. Only virtue endures.

Spiritual Applications:
– Live each day as if it were your last chance to love and repent.
– Be detached from the world and practice holy indifference.
– Avoid delay in confession or conversion. The next moment is a gift, not a right.
– Ask: “If I were to die today, would I be ready to meet Jesus?”

Saintly Echoes:
– St. Philip Neri: “Nothing is more dangerous than to delay conversion.”
– St. Francis of Assisi: “Let us begin to serve the Lord, for until now we have done nothing.”
– St. Alphonsus: “Our time is short. Let us spend it in loving God and saving our souls.”

Reflection:
What if today were your final moment?
Would you be found in a state of grace?
Would your life show evidence of love for God and others?

Let this chapter stir urgency—not fear, but holy zeal. For each moment is a divine opportunity to prepare for eternity.
