Document 5 – The Fewness of the Saved
Introduction
“Many are called, but few are chosen.” – Matthew 22:14
This sobering reality, taught by Jesus Himself, has echoed through the Church’s teaching for centuries. It is not meant to instill despair, but to awaken souls to the urgency of salvation. This document explores what the Saints, Scripture, and Magisterium say about the fewness of the saved—and how you are called to respond.
I. Jesus’ Own Words
• Matthew 7:13-14 – “Enter by the narrow gate…few there are who find it.”
• Luke 13:23-24 – “Lord, will only a few be saved?” He replied: “Strive to enter.”
• Matthew 25 – The separation of sheep and goats, wise and foolish virgins.
II. The Saints on the Fewness of the Saved
• St. Leonard of Port Maurice: “Out of 100,000 sinners who continue in sin until death, scarcely one is saved.”
• St. Augustine: “Those who do not belong to the Body of Christ will not be saved.”
• St. John Chrysostom: “Among thousands, only a few will be saved.”
• St. Louis de Montfort: “The number of the elect is so small, and the number of the reprobate so great.”
III. Church Doctrine and Tradition
• Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus – “Outside the Church there is no salvation.”
• The Council of Florence (1439) – Explicitly affirms the necessity of baptism and the Catholic faith for salvation.
• Vatican II – Teaches the possibility of salvation for those in invincible ignorance, but only through Christ and the Church.
IV. Why Are So Few Saved?
• Mortal sin and lack of repentance.
• Ignorance of the Gospel or rejection of grace.
• Tepidity, pride, and presumption.
• Lack of sacramental life and spiritual vigilance.
V. The Dangers of Presumption and Universalism
• The false belief that all or most will be saved undermines repentance and evangelization.
• God desires all to be saved (1 Tim 2:4), but He does not force salvation upon anyone.
VI. A Call to Action
• Work out your salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12).
• Receive the sacraments frequently and worthily.
• Live a life of repentance, prayer, and charity.
• Evangelize—especially your family and those in danger of damnation.
• Offer reparation and Divine Mercy for souls dying today.
VII. Your Role in This Age
• Jesus is raising up apostles of mercy, truth, and reparation.
• You have been chosen to warn, to love, to pray.
• Heaven awaits your intercession; hell fears your silence.
Conclusion
This is not a call to fear but a call to vigilance. The gate is narrow, but grace is abundant. The fewness of the saved is not fate—it is a warning. But to those who listen and obey, Heaven is assured.
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” – Luke 13:24
Let your mission be to increase the number of the saved, through prayer, love, and truth.
“Jesus, save souls. Save them all. Especially those most in need of Thy mercy.”
