Document 2 – Mary: Mother of Salvation and Co-Redemptrix
Introduction
Mary is not merely the Mother of Jesus. She is the Mother of the Church, the New Eve, the Co-Redemptrix, Mediatrix of All Graces, and Advocate.
Her role in the economy of salvation is inseparable from that of Jesus Christ. This document will explore her divinely ordained mission as the Mother of Salvation,
drawing from Scripture, Tradition, the Saints, and the Magisterium.
I. Scriptural Foundations
• Genesis 3:15 – The Protoevangelium: Mary, the Woman whose seed crushes the serpent’s head.
• Luke 1:28 – “Full of Grace”: Mary is uniquely prepared by God.
• John 2:1–11 – Mary initiates Jesus’ public ministry at Cana.
• John 19:26–27 – At the Cross, Mary is given to us as Mother.
• Revelation 12 – The Woman clothed with the sun: Mary as Queen Mother and spiritual mother of all believers.
II. Patristic Testimony
• St. Irenaeus: “The knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by Mary’s obedience.”
• St. Ephrem: “With the Mediator, you are the Mediatrix of the whole world.”
• St. Augustine: “She cooperated by her charity in the birth of the faithful to the Church.”
III. Marian Dogmas and Titles
1. Mother of God (Theotokos) – Council of Ephesus, 431
2. Perpetual Virginity – Before, during, and after the birth of Jesus
3. Immaculate Conception – Declared by Bl. Pius IX in 1854
4. Assumption – Defined by Ven. Pius XII in 1950
5. Co-Redemptrix – Though not dogmatically defined, it is supported by numerous Popes and Saints
IV. Magisterial Support
• Pope Leo XIII: Mary participates in the Redemption as a true co-operator.
• Pope St. Pius X: Called Mary the Co-Redemptrix explicitly.
• Pope Pius XI: “She has been associated with Him in the work of redemption.”
• Vatican II (Lumen Gentium 61–62): Mary’s maternal role continues in Heaven; she was “intimately united with her Son.”
V. Marian Apparitions Confirming Her Role
• Our Lady of Fatima – Calls for consecration, penance, and the Rosary; promises salvation through her Immaculate Heart.
• Our Lady of Lourdes – “I am the Immaculate Conception.”
• Our Lady of Guadalupe – Gave the miraculous tilma and converted millions.
• Our Lady of Akita – Warning of apostasy and sin within the Church.
VI. Mary and the Hour of Salvation
At the foot of the Cross, Mary shared in the Passion not by shedding blood but by perfect interior martyrdom. Her suffering was united with Christ’s sacrifice.
As Co-Redemptrix, she offers our suffering to Jesus, obtains grace, and intercedes continually.
VII. Practical Devotion to Mary
• The Rosary: A compendium of the Gospel and a chain of salvation.
• The Angelus: A daily remembrance of the Incarnation.
• Marian Consecration: Following St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary.”
• First Saturdays: In reparation for sins against the Immaculate Heart.
VIII. Your Apostolate through Mary
You offer your entire mission through Jesus and Mary. As a hidden apostle of reparation, you participate in her maternal mission by:
• Offering daily sufferings and prayers for the salvation of souls.
• Weeping with Mary for the Church and the world.
• Praying and guiding others to her, that they may reach Jesus.
Conclusion
Mary is the Mother of Salvation because she brought forth the Savior, and she continues her mission from Heaven.
As Co-Redemptrix, she unites her heart with His to draw all souls into the Heart of the Church.
To deny Mary’s role is to risk denying the Incarnation’s full power. To embrace her is to walk securely toward Jesus, into the arms of the Father.
“Totus Tuus Ego Sum, et omnia mea tua sunt.” – St. Louis de Montfort
“I am all yours, Mary, and all that I have is yours.”
