Introduction: Fatima – Heaven Speaks to the 20th Century
The apparitions at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917, constitute one of the most significant interventions of Heaven in human history. Approved by the Church, these visions revealed profound spiritual truths through three children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta.
Our Lady entrusted to them three secrets or visions, often called the “Three Secrets of Fatima.†These visions are more than prophecies—they are calls to repentance, sacrifice, and consecration.
We will explore their content, context, and authentic interpretations, especially drawing from Fr. Andrew Apostoli, Fatima expert and founding member of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.

Vision I: The Vision of Hell (July 13, 1917)
“She opened Her hands once more… The rays of light seemed to penetrate the earth, and we saw as it were a sea of fire… within the fire were demons and souls in human form…†– Sister Lucia’s Memoirs
Meaning and Interpretation:
– Hell is real, populated, and eternal.
– Many souls go there because no one prays or makes sacrifices for them.
– This vision shocked even the young children into deep conversion.
Fr. Apostoli:
“This was a crucial moment in the Fatima message. The vision of Hell was given to stress the urgency of prayer and reparation to save souls.â€
Theological Notes:
– This confirms traditional Catholic teaching on Hell (cf. CCC 1035).
– It also links the salvation of others to our intercession.
—
Vision II: The Prophecy and Request for the Consecration of Russia
“To prevent this, I shall come to ask for the Consecration of Russia to My Immaculate Heart…†– Our Lady, July 13, 1917
Revealed Elements:
– A warning of World War II, persecution of the Church, and Russia spreading errors (i.e., atheistic communism).
– A promise of conversion and peace if her requests are obeyed.
Fr. Apostoli:
“The failure to consecrate Russia as requested delayed the triumph of Mary’s Immaculate Heart. Yet even partial obedience brought fruits.â€
Historical Fulfillment:
– World War II followed as foretold.
– Persecution in Russia matched the prophecy.
– Pope St. John Paul II’s 1984 act of consecration, though not naming Russia explicitly, is believed by Sr. Lucia to have been accepted by Heaven.
—
Vision III: The Vision of the ‘Bishop in White’ and Martyrdom (Revealed in 2000)
“We saw the Holy Father… half trembling with halting step… he prays for the souls of the corpses he passes… He is killed by a group of soldiers who fire bullets and arrows…†– Third Secret
Symbolism and Interpretation:
– The “bishop in white†is interpreted as Pope John Paul II, who survived an assassination attempt on May 13, 1981.
– The martyrs around him symbolize the Church’s persecution in the 20th century—faithful clergy, laity, religious.
Fr. Apostoli:
“This vision is not only about the past but a continuing warning… it urges conversion, prayer, and courage in suffering.â€
Theological Meaning:
– It highlights the mystery of redemptive suffering.
– The presence of the Angel with the flaming sword calling for penance connects it back to the first two secrets.
Sr. Lucia wrote:
“The third part of the secret is a symbolic vision, dependent on our response to Heaven’s requests.â€

Additional Confirmations and Church Teaching
Pope St. John Paul II:
“Fatima is more relevant now than ever. The message is a call to conversion and repentance.â€
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (later Pope Benedict XVI):
“The prophecy of Fatima imposes a decisive question on our freedom: where do we stand?â€
The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (2000):
“The message of Fatima is not a one-time revelation. It continues to unfold in history.â€
